‘The Workshop’

ESH, The Hague, NL, 2024

‘The Workshop’ is a sonic documentation of a workshop that took place at the European School ofThe Hague in May 2024.

Designed both as a dialogue between practices (Cis De Gendt and Angelina Nonaj) and as aspace for collective experimentation - the two-day workshop brought together 17students/participants to experience and play with various tools for thinking about ‘environments’.

The first part of the workshop focused on familiarizing participants with the act of listening.Through collectively performed text scores and the use of different recording tools, participantsexplored ways to pay attention to the sounds and relationships present in their environment.

This session transitioned from listening to performing, with students bringing sounds from theirown environments to create collaborative sonic compositions; exploring as well the potential ofrecording and playback.

The second part of the workshop shifted to a more performative approach, emphasizing the actof composing with the environment (or composing an environment), allowing participants tocreate and interact with their surroundings and each other through text and sound-based games.

Rather than solely sharing a possible “outcome” of the workshop, this work comprises thedocumentation of the workshop itself. Its editing is inspired by the use of the montage in avant-garde documentary and diary filmmaking.
