Counter-Class
partecipatory event, workshop
Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, 2024

What happens when we play with structure?

Counter-Class has been a first iteration of a workshop and participatory event at the Piet Zwart Institute, fictionalizing the format of a group critique into a playground for experimenting with different possibilities for dialogue.

Guided through risks by three anti-teachers (N, I, A), the participants engaged in material and language-based games, responding to embedded scores within their environment.

Instead of approaching design as a process of creating finished structures, Counter-Class wished to rethink both structural questions around design and formulate open questions about designing structure.

Drawing from the radical design movement in Italy (Enzo Mari, Bruno Munari), Simon Nicholson’s Loose Parts theory, the Reggio Emilia educational approach, and thinkers like Paulo Freire, bell hooks, and David Graeber, the workshop centered on designing conditions for dialogue and participation, where space was understood as process, and participation as the outcome.
